When Steve moved from Dallas, Texas to Green Bay, Wisconsin in 2009, he was taking on a whole new chapter, and he’s been building a meaningful, independent life ever since.
Since 2016, Steve has been living independently in his own apartment and working steadily at St. Norbert College since 2010, a testament to his dedication and strong work ethic. At the college cafeteria, Steve is known for keeping things clean, organized, and running smoothly. Whether he’s making sure tables and dishes are spotless or stocking supplies, Steve is always ready to help however he’s needed.
“My coworkers are nice,” Steve says with a smile, which speaks to the welcoming community he’s built at work. Steve’s approach to life is both brave and hopeful. “Sometimes the outside world can be a bit scary, but don’t be afraid,” he says. “Everyone has potential to do something great.”
It’s this mindset that keeps Steve pushing forward, trying new things, and connecting with others. Steve truly values his friendships and the connections he makes with people. He believes his friends would describe him as awesome, dependable, trustworthy, brave, loving, and faithful, qualities that truly shine in every aspect of his life. “They appreciate when I check on them,” Steve shares, showing how much he values his relationships and the community around him.
Lakeland Care Manager, Molly H., says, “I see how Steve approaches each day with joy in his heart and a drive that I aspire to match.” Steve stays incredibly active outside of work. You might spot him riding his bike along the Fox River Trail, playing softball with The Pink Flamingo team, or volunteering at Camp Daniel. He also cherishes time with his nieces and nephews and is looking forward to his exciting new role, competing as a driver in an upcoming horse show that isn’t disability-specific. His mom, Julie, is especially proud of this milestone.
Through the years, Steve has taken on diverse roles that helped him grow his skills, from handling CO2 cartridges for soda machines to folding towels in the Lambeau Field locker rooms. And while being a Dallas native made working with the Packers a little complicated at first, he and Julie joke that it helped him become “both a Cowboys and a Packers fan!”
Steve has been an employer through Self-Directed Supports (SDS) since 2020 for things like grocery shopping and staying on top of housework. SDS allows Steve to choose his own employee and sets the schedule. He knows that he will get the support he wants and needs, which allows him to maintain his apartment. “I need reminders to stay organized,” he says with honesty and humor, a reminder that everyone benefits from the right supports in their journey toward independence.
Steve’s story is a powerful reminder that with determination, the right support, and a strong community, everyone can thrive. Whether he’s working, volunteering, or cheering on his favorite team(s), Steve is showing the world what’s possible, one clean table, one softball swing, and one act of kindness at a time.
