Meet LCI member, Lina! Lina has been a valued employee at TJ Maxx for the past four years, and her journey is a powerful example of growth, perseverance, and success in competitive integrated employment.
Lina initially obtained her position with support through DVR and began her career in the backroom hanging clothes. Over time, she steadily built her skills and confidence, advancing to stocking, working on the sales floor, and ultimately becoming a cashier—where she truly shines.
Since joining TJ Maxx, Lina has earned multiple recognitions for her outstanding work performance. She has been recognized for her success with credit card sign-ups, named Associate of the Quarter, and acknowledged by the District Manager for her contributions. Customer feedback consistently highlights Lina’s excellence, with surveys praising her positive attitude and exceptional customer service. Many regular customers even choose to wait in line so they can be checked out by Lina.
Today, she also serves as a mentor to others on the front end of the store. TJ Maxx leadership speaks highly of Lina’s impact on the workplace culture. Lina’s managers describe her as a positive and important part of the TJ Maxx team.
Sayra, Store Manager, expressed that Lina is “Great, not only employee, but person. It is great to see her story shine through like it has.” She describes Lina as a “People person and very positive.” Sharing that, “Lina adds to a positive work culture. We love having her here.”
Assistant Store Manager Jen said, “Lina has come a long way and continues to do well.”
Lina’s Care Manager, Jessica, also emphasized her growth both on and off the job: “Lina is a shining example of resilience and hard work in both her home and work life.” She further noted, “I would also like to commend TJ Maxx, specifically Jen and Sayra, who support Lina and give her feedback on both opportunities and strengths.”
A key part of Lina’s success has been the strong encouragement she has received from her guardian, Jackie. Jackie has played an instrumental role in supporting Lina’s growth and independence. Their relationship began years ago through the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program, where Jackie served as Lina’s “Big Sister.” Over time, this supportive relationship grew into guardianship, with Jackie continuing to encourage Lina to take on new challenges, build confidence, and pursue greater independence in both her work and home life.
Before working at TJ Maxx, Lina spent years in a sheltered workshop for people with disabilities. Today, she proudly shares that she “likes working at TJ Maxx much better!” When asked what she enjoys most about her job, Lina says, “Working with coworkers, customers, and my supervisors who motivate me every day.”
Employment has had a positive ripple effect throughout Lina’s life. She reports improvements in her mood and mental health, as well as increased independence. Lina now lives in a supported apartment—after previously living in a group home—where she enjoys caring for her beta fish, Stitch. Tools like her phone and smartwatch have also helped her further build independence in daily life.
Looking ahead, Lina has clear goals for continued growth. She hopes to learn the jewelry department so she can help cover shifts and expand her skills even further.
Outside of work, Lina enjoys staying creative and connected. She makes handmade gifts for coworkers using diamond art and her Cricut to create mugs and sweatshirts. In warmer weather, she loves riding her Jimmy Buffett bike. Lina also attends a weekly peer group focused on learning about healthy relationships.
Lina’s story highlights what is possible when meaningful employment, supportive employers, strong advocacy, and individualized supports come together. She is not only succeeding at work—she is building a full, independent, and fulfilling life in her community.
